We are delighted that Professor Richard Levenson will join us for Pathology Horizons 2016. He will present in the session on Pathology Imaging on “A  New, Fast, Simple Microscopy Method for Slide-Free Histology and Surface Topography”.

Microscopy with Ultraviolet Surface Excitation (MUSE) is a novel rapid approach for obtaining high-resolution, diagnostic-quality histological images from unsectioned thick tissue specimens.

According to Richard, it is an inexpensive, rapid and slide-free, sample-sparing method with the potential to replace frozen sections. In his view it may have other applications in clinical and pre-clinical pathology.

Currently Professor and Vice Chair for Strategic Technologies in the Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UC Davis, Richard’s Research activities include development of mass-tag-based multiplexed ion-beam imaging for up to 100-plex immunohistochemistry (Nat Med, 2014) and RNA in-situ detection. His areas of interest aso encompasses artificial intelligence for image analysis, informatics. cancer immunotherapy; digital autopsy, and real-time, slide-free ex-vivo tissue microscopy.

muse-richard-levensonA recent project gained a great deal of attention in the media. It was about  evaluating the capabilities of pigeons to detect breast cancer on pathology and radiology images. “It was was published in PLOS ONE and has received more attention than any of my more mainstream efforts” is Richard’s comment and “Still trying to figure out what to do with the birds next.”

Join us 15-17 September in Galway for Pathology Horizons 2016 to hear about MUSE,what is happening with the pigeons and other though-provoking concepts.  For more information and to register visit the conference home page at pathologyhorizons.com.
