Dr. Peter Hamilton is Business Lead for Philips Digital Pathology in Belfast. Peter was founder of PathXL Ltd, a digital pathology software company specializing in tumor analysis, which was acquired by Philips in 2016. Prior to moving to Philips, he was also Professor of Tissue Biomarker Imaging and Informatics within the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology at Queen’s University Belfast.
For the past 25 years, Peter has been leading research on computer vision and decision support in diagnostic cancer pathology and the identification of novel digital tissue and cell markers for diagnostics, prognostics and for predicting response to therapy in cancer. Recent work has focused on automated high throughput image analysis of tissue microarrays for biomarker discovery and digital pathology for precision medicine. Peter has developed novel approaches for the development of prognostic algorithms using methods such as case-based reasoning, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms. His work on Bayesian belief networks has led to the development of novel virtual training environments for pathology. Peter has published over 150 papers in this field and has been funded by numerous government, industrial and cancer charity grants to build new technologies in digital pathology and cellular imaging in cancer. Peter continues to work with the highly talented team in Northern Ireland and The Netherlands to build award winning products within Philips – and is driven to transform pathology, improve cancer diagnostics and enhance precision medicine through the use of digital technologies.
